Degas' study of dancers became an all-encompassing passion to master the effect of light, color and especially, movement. In order to better understand the strength and agile flexibility of the ballerina, Degas began sculpting in clay and wax, a technique that he perfected in later years as his eyesight began to fail. This delicate dancer is taking her first steps in ballet, blending the pride and graceful poise of a ballerina.
