An enduring and classic image of motherhood.
Taught by Laredo Taft, Bessie Potter Vonnoh became one of the most popular American sculptors in the first quarter of the 20th century. In her lifetime, she saw her work purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts. In spite of a turn to more monumental sculptures in 1920s and 1930s, Vonnoh is best remembered for intimate pieces, particularly figures of mothers and chidren such as this one.
